Welcome Students to Your Course with a Personalized Greeting
FOR MORE FILTERS AND HOW YOU CAN USE THEM TO SAVE TIME IN COURSE DEVELOPMENT, VISIT THE FACULTY GUIDE TO ACADEMIC TECHNOLOGY.
1. Open your course in Moodle and click "Turn editing on."
2. Click on "Edit" for the top section of the course. Then click "Edit section."
3. Check "Custom" for the Section name.
The default name for the top section of a course is "General." Checking the Custom box allows you to create a custom heading for this section.
4. Enter a personalized greeting as the Section name.
Moodle can use a personalization filter to populate the student's name when he/she opens your course. The filter for a student's first name is:
{USER_FIRSTNAME}
Enter the filter into your course greeting. For example:
Welcome, {USER_FIRSTNAME}, to [the course name].
5. Enter the rest of your welcome message and/or a course description in the "Course summary" field and Save changes.
6. Now each student will be welcomed to your course with a personalized and inclusive greeting!
