How to Copy Content between Courses
The Registrar’s Office creates new courses in Moodle prior to the start of each new term. Once you have your Moodle course shell(s) for the upcoming term, you can start adding content.
If you want to re-use content from a previous course, you can use the Course Reuse feature to import content from one course to another.
Three important things to know:
- You must have an editing (faculty) role in the course you are copying from and the course you are copying to. You can copy content to and from any courses in which you are enrolled as “faculty.”
- All new course shells are created in Topics format by default. If you want to use a course format other than Topics (e.g., Tiles, Grid, OneTopic, etc), then you should change your new course into that format before copying the content from your old course.
- Before you begin, you need the name of the “old” course (the source you are copying from), i.e., the existing course from which you want to copy.
Follow these steps to copy content between courses:
- Go to your course Dashboard and open the Moodle shell for the new course.
IMPORTANT: All new courses are created in Topics format by default. If your “old” course is in a different format (e.g., Tiles, OneTopic, etc.) and you want to maintain that formatting, you need to change the format of the new course to match the format of the old course before copying the content.
For example, if you used the Tiles format last term, and want to use the Tiles format again, change your new course to Tiles format BEFORE following the rest of these instructions.
2. In your new course, click More in the Course Administration Menu, and select Course Reuse from the dropdown menu.
3. On the Find a course to import page, use the Search field at the bottom to enter the name of the course you want to copy. Click Search.
4. Select the course and click Continue.
5. On the Import Settings screen, you can select categories of content you want to copy. The default is for all to be checked.
6. Click Next if you want to narrow the selection further (for example, you want to copy some but not all). Otherwise, click Jump to final step.
7. A progress bar will show that the course is importing. When it’s done it will say: “Import complete.”
8. Click Continue to return to your “new” course, which now includes the imported content from your “old” course.
Important: There may be duplicate content that needs to be removed, or other content that needs to be updated. Be sure to review the entire course before making it available to students.
